  1. fossilized resin from coniferous trees of the
  2. Middle Tertiary period. It is often washed
  3. ashore on the Baltic coast with plant and
  4. animal specimens preserved in it; many
  5. extinct species have been found preserved in
  6. this way. It ranges in color from red to
  7. yellow, and is used to make jewelry. 
  8. When amber is rubbed with cloth, it attracts
  9. light objects, such as feathers. The effect,
  10. first noticed by the ancient Greeks, is due
  11. to acquisition of negative electric charge,
  12. hence the adaptation of the Greek word for
  13. amber, elektron, for electricity (see static
  14. electricity). 
  15. Amber has been coveted for its supposed
  16. special properties since prehistoric times.
  17. Archeologists have found amulets made of
  18. amber dating back as far as 35000 BC. 
  19. Amber's preservative properties were
  20. demonstrated in 1992 when DNA was extracted
  21. from insects estimated to be around 30
  22. million years old which were found fossilized
  23. in amber.
